Precisely 100 years ago, September 14, 1901, Theodore
Roosevelt became President of the United States, ushering in an era of sweeping
social, economic and political reform for America and the world. In this
difficult time, let us be guided by his spirit of hard work, duty, integrity and
justice.
Pictured above is the most reproduced photograph of all time. The editors of US Camera Magazine said that it "recorded the soul of a nation." It was taken on February 23, 1945 and portrays 6 US Marines (2 marines are in the background) raising the American Flag over Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima. Regrettably, the battle was far from over and within a month, 3 of these marines would die in combat on that very island. Yet we still won that battle - and that war ! Click here for more information. Yes, this photo does capture the soul of our nation. When confronted with any obstacle - in spite of the difficulty - despite great danger - no matter how great the cost - nor how great the sacrifice - we will always prevail ! In the words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt "This great nation will endure as it has endured."
